How it All Began
baby nurse kathryn
In high school I knew I wanted to become a nurse. After 9/11 I wanted to join the Army. I grew up watching the TV Show MASH so the dream to be an Army Nurse was born!

I first worked at Walter Reed near Washington DC with the Wounded Warriors. They taught me my nursing skills, pushed my limits as a person, showed me my love for teaching, and my love for developing the next generation.

I have taught CPR classes, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Courses, Charge Nurse Classes, New Nurse Training Classes and Teamwork Communication Classes.
I have also worked with a Combat Support Hospital (think present day MASH- yes dream came true!) and as a civilian assistant nurse manager. In every role I have found ways to make myself an educator either by title or by making my own opportunities haha.
I am so excited to now be taking my love of teaching to the online space in the form of Coffee and Capillaries!
How the blog came to be
I am a Registered Nurse and got my start as an Army Nurse for 5 years. My background is as a bedside nurse before taking on roles with higher levels of leadership. In every job I have found ways to use my love for teaching.
As a Nurse I was often on the receiving end of questions from people asking for input about their loved ones health. Coffee and Capillaries is my response to those conversations and to the gap of basic knowledge of how our bodies work.

Why does this matter to me?
I believe that you are the best person to advocate for you and your loved ones health. I hope to be able to help you feel empowered to advocate for the health of your loved one or yourself, to help give you a foundation of how the healthy body functions. This way you can ask better questions and take in more information from your healthcare team.
So let’s get learning!
The blog is organized into three sections the first is “Functions of the Healthy Body” where we discuss how the body is created to work. The second section is “Effects of an Impaired Body” where we discuss common ailments and injuries. The third is “Body Basics” where I provide an overview of the body systems.
